MARY-JANE LEE Mary-Jane Lee has been hailed by critics as “a very promising young soprano with a lustrous voice and a charming stage presence.” Her rich, “steely” soprano combined with her striking dramatic ability have brought her success in performing a variety of roles. Most recently Ms. Lee was seen in The Last Savage, Faust, La Bohème, and Wozzeck with Santa Fe Opera. Other recent performances include the role of La Contessa in Le Nozze di Figaro and Musetta in La Bohème with Aspen Opera Theater, as well as Micaëla in Carmen with the Chautauqua Institution. Her other roles include Desiree Amrfeldt in A Little Night Music, Ciesca in Gianni Schicchi, the Prima Donna from Ariadne auf Naxos, Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni, Adina in L’Elisir d’Amore, The Mother in Amahl and the Night Visitors, and the title roles in The Ballad of Baby Doe and Luisa Fernanda. Also an active concert performer and recitalist, Ms. Lee has recently been presented in recital with the Missouri River Festival of the Arts, the Insbrook Institute, and the Nantucket Musical Arts Society. Comfortable with contemporary repertoire, Ms. Lee premiered works by composer Robert McClure and has work-shopped and performed other new works including Steven Schwartz’s Séance on a Wet Afternoon with Opera America, Theodore Morrison’s Oscar with Santa Fe Opera and Ben Moore’s Enemies, a Love Story with the Chautauqua Institution. A recipient of the Cecilia Bartoli Scholarship and the Jerry and Nanette Finger Prize, Ms. Lee has also received awards from the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, the Palm Beach Opera Vocal Competition, and the Dallas Opera Guild Competition. She received her Master’s degree from Rice University Shepherd School of Music and completed her Bachelor of Music degree at Utah State University with additional training from the Santa Fe Opera Apprentice Program, Aspen Music Festival, and the Chautauqua Institution. |
