AUDITION CATEGORIES

There are four audition categories with separate audition requirements available for this round of auditions. An accompanist will be provided at no cost, or you may provide your own.

 

  1. Non-Regional Artists
  2. Resident Artists (Regional)
  3. Young Artists, Ages 18-34 for the Opera Academy of the Midwest
  4. Chorus

 

AUDITION MATERIALS

Auditions will be by invitation only. To be considered for an invitation, please submit the following items to: Wichita Grand Opera, Century II Performing Arts Center, 225 W Douglas Ave., Wichita, KS 67202.  To be eligible for consideration, all materials must be received no later than 5:00pm, October 21, 2016.

  2. Application Processing Fee of $25 made out to: Wichita Grand Opera (The Fee is waived for Chorus applicants)

Upon receipt of your materials, you will be sent a confirmation email confirming that your materials have been received by Wichita Grand Opera.

 

Any repertoire changes for applications already submitted must be received no later than October 31, 2016.

 

AUDITION INVITATION

If you are invited to audition, you will receive an invitation email by Tuesday, October 27, 2015. To accept your invitation, you will need to submit a $50 check deposit made out to Wichita Grand Opera to reserve your audition time slot. Your check will be returned to you at the Registration Table prior to your audition. However, if you fail to appear for your reserved audition time slot, your check will be cashed and it will be non-refundable.

 

AUDITION REQUIREMENTS

 

Non-Regional Artists:

  1. Training:  Professional opera singers who live outside of the Great Plains region of the United States may audition for principal and secondary roles.
  2. Experience:  Applicants should have recent experience performing leading roles with professional opera companies in the United States, Europe, and/or elsewhere in the world.
  3. Requirements:  4 arias in 4 different languages from the standard opera repertoire.

 

Resident Artists (Regional):

  1. Training:  Regionally based professional opera singers are invited to audition for the WGO Resident Artists Program.
  2. Experience: Applicants are expected to have experience singing in various capacities with professional opera companies in the United States, Europe, and/or elsewhere in the world.
  3. Requirements:  4 arias in 4 different languages from the standard opera repertoire.

 

NOTE: Resident artists are provided with opportunities to expand and enhance their professional careers in the region where they are employed, and become vital contributors to the growth and success of their regional opera company. They may be contracted to perform principal, secondary, or minor roles, or to sing in the chorus. Remuneration is based on contractual agreement.

 

Young Artists, Ages 18-34 for the Opera Academy of the Midwest

  1. Training:  Regionally based opera performance majors and graduates are eligible to audition for the Young Artists Program.
  2. Experience: Applicants are expected to have performance experience in their university opera programs, other young artist programs, and other performance opportunities.
  3. Requirements:  4 arias in 4 different languages from the standard operatic repertoire.

 

NOTE: This program is designed to help guide young opera singers in their transition from students to professional opera singers. Young Artists receive: professional on-stage experience singing in the chorus; coaching sessions with conductors and coaches; staging concepts with stage directors; participation in master classes, workshops and seminars; and opportunities to perform with and learn from world-class opera stars. Young Artists may be invited to cover, understudy, or sing roles as appropriate.

 

Chorus

  1. Training:  Applicants are expected to have some vocal training by a professional voice teacher, and training in singing foreign languages.
  2. Experience: Applicants are expected to have some experience performing with organized choirs and ensembles directed by trained conductors.
  3. Requirements: One aria or art song sung in its original language of Italian, German, or French.

 

NOTE: Chorus members must be willing and available to attend weekly chorus rehearsals in Wichita during the summer and fall. Previous members of the chorus are not required to re-audition.
