Welcome

Parvan Bakardiev, CEO
It is always a pleasure to welcome our patrons back to Wichita Grand Opera. An extraordinary season has taken shape for 2011-12, featuring all new productions; we thank you for being part of it, and thank the many generous friends whose contributions and enthusiasm make it possible. Wichita Grand Opera is our opera, whether you’re a devoted patron, a loyal subscriber, or a newcomer curious to learn what all the fuss is about.

As opening night approaches, something magical takes shape in Wichita. Artists, musicians, conductors, directors, designers, and apprentices all begin to assemble. Sets are constructed and reconstructed. Props and costumes are built, and rehearsals begin. Century II hums – and sings.

With Verdi’s Il Trovatore we present a masterpiece of opera. Led by renowned American Maestro Steven Mercurio, and featuring international superstars Julian Gavin and Zvetelina Vassileva, it will be a feast for the ears, the eyes, and the heart. With J. Strauss’ Die Fledermaus, or “The Bat”, we welcome tenor Michael Hayes back to Wichita. Currently appearing on Broadway, Mr. Hayes starred in our landmark 2003 production of Carmen on the Lake. Performed in a witty English translation, the production will be directed by a true Viennese expert: James McNamara of the Frankfurt Opera.

Donizetti, the Italian master, wrote roughly 75 operas over the course of his career. This year marks the WGO premiere of one of his lesser-known treasures, Don Pasquale. In a new staging by director John Stephens, “The Don” gets a modern twist. For our ballet lovers, we add a glorious performance of one of the two most famous ballets of all time: Adolphe Adam’s Giselle, performed by the Moscow Festival Ballet. And our season-finale Opera on the Lake will surpass everyone’s expectations; our Artistic Director is working on a new concept that will make this year’s event the most spectacular since 2003’s Carmen.

We take special pride in our world-renowned artistic staff, led by Artistic Director Margaret Ann Pent. In addition to those I already mentioned, we welcome conductors Whitney Reader and Edward Lada, and director Shayna Leahy. Our resident choreographer Diane Gans will be on hand once again to give our productions the graceful touch of dance. The award-winning St. Petersburg Quartet will also be in residence once more to serve as the first chairs in our 50-member orchestra.

Although plans for next season are already under way, it is this moment – when some of the world’s greatest opera productions begin to take shape – that makes me grateful to be part of our extraordinary organization.

Thank you for joining us, and welcome back to Wichita Grand Opera.
